Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then located numerous other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A senior political figure stated the incident left him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
