The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
