Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
