The former Brazilian president arrested after being considered a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of the former president's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
