Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
